La Opinion, one of the most respected and oldest Spanish-language newspapers in the country, has endorsed John Kerry. The paper's national circulation is close to 500,000, and its website is one of the most visited websites in Spanish. An English translation follows.

Estados Unidos atraviesa una difícil etapa de su historia, con retos domésticos que afectan a la base de la sociedad y exigencias internacionales por ser la indisputable potencia mundial. Ambos frentes se han deteriorado en estos últimos años por las decisiones tomadas en la Casa Blanca. Se hace necesario cambiar y el senador John Kerry puede guiar al país a salir del círculo de opciones limitadas donde lo ha puesto el presidente George W. Bush.
El Presidente, quien prometió hace cuatro años ser “unificador en vez de divisor” de la nación, desperdició dos momentos en que era necesaria esta virtud: tras la elección de 2000 y ante la buena voluntad mundial después del 9/11. En el primer caso, gobernó desde el primer momento con un extremismo propio de un amplio mandato popular, que él no tenía. En el segundo, la misma actitud arrogante se manifestó en forma de un unilateralismo a ultranza que condujo al aislamiento del país y al presente caos en Irak. Es irónico que el candidato Bush prometiera en 2000 una política exterior “humilde”.
El contraste entre las ofertas de los candidatos es evidente. Kerry tiene una visión integral, humanística podría decirse, de las dificultades domésticas allí donde el Presidente ve sólo fuerzas del mercado, como en el área de salud. En lo económico es necesario rectificar la política impositiva y presupuestal que conduce a unos déficit gigantescos. En inmigración, el demócrata habla de un camino hacia la legalización bajo ciertas condiciones mientras que la Casa Blanca argumenta un plan vago de trabajos temporales y bloquea el proyecto de ley bipartidista AgJobs. En educación, creemos que Kerry será más consistente que el Presidente y que financie adecuadamente el programa que “Que no quede ningún niño rezagado”. Finalmente, el senador tiene un criterio legal moderno para seleccionar a los jueces federales frente al restriccionismo del Presidente que hace peligrar los derechos individuales.
John Kerry tiene la capacidad y el carácter para ser comandante en jefe y velar por la seguridad nacional ante las amenazas del terrorismo y las complicaciones creadas en la guerra de Irak. Un cambio de gobierno ayudará a dar vuelta la página y retomar relaciones importantes que pueden ayudar a estabilizar a la nación árabe. En lo interno, creemos que es posible proteger a la sociedad sin violar los derechos civiles y sin maltratar a los inmigrantes.
La solución de los retos comienza reconociendo errores que permitan girar el timón y encauzar la nave por mejores aguas. El presidente Bush mostró un empecinamiento insalubre, mientras que el senador Kerry representa un cambio de rumbo necesario —pese a la incógnita de algunos de sus planes. The United States crosses a difficult phase in its history, with domestic challenges that affect the base of society and international demands by being the indisputable world power. Both fronts have deteriorated in these last years by the decisions taken in the White House. It is necessary to change and Senator John Kerry can guide the country to leave the circle of limited options where it has been placed by President George W. Bush.
The President, who promised four years ago to be a “a uniter not adivider” of the nation, wasted two moments in time when it was necessary to apply this virtue: after the election of 2000 and the good will of the world after the 9/11 tragedy. In the first case, since the first moment he governed with an extremism that could only come from an extensive popular mandate that he lacked. On the second, the same arrogant attitude was declared in the shape of unilateralism to an extreme that drove the country to be isolated and to the present chaos in Iraq. It is ironic that candidate Bush in 2000 would promise a “humble” foreign policy.
The contrast between the two candidate’s offers is evident. Kerry has a humanistic, integral vision of the domestic difficulties that affect the country, there where the President sees only the force of the market, as in the area of health. In the case of the economy it is necessary to rectify the tax and budgetary policies that have driven us to a gigantic deficit. In immigration, the Democratic [candidate] talks about a road towards legalization under certain conditions, while the White House argues a vague plan of temporary works and the blocks the bipartisan bill AgJobs. In education, we believe that Kerry will be more consistent than the President and that he will adequately finance the “Leave No Child Behind” program. Finally, the Senator has a modern legal criterion to select judges in contrast with the President’s restrictive view that endangers individual rights.
John Kerry has the capacity and the character to be the “commander in chief” and to be vigilant of the nation’s national security upon the challenge of terrorism threats and complications created by the war in Iraq. A change of government will help to turn the page and to take up again important relations that will help to stabilize to the Arab nations. Internally, we believe that it is possible to protect the people without violating their civil rights and without mistreating immigrants.
The solution for the challenges begins by recognizing the mistakes made that will permit to rotate the wheel and channel the ship towards better waters. President Bush showed an unhealthy stubbornness, while Senator Kerry represents a necessary change of course —despite the unknowns of some of his plans. Therefore vote for John Kerry for president!
